Summary

of risks and control

Capacity

Strict adherence to TAC (Total Allowable Catch) regulations

Temperature

Generally cool climate as a result of cold seas off the west coast

Intake reduced in unfavourably warm weather conditions

Analysis

Raw Fish

Representative samples of all fish that is offloaded are taken and sent to independent SANAS-approved laboratories. This is done in order to determine total volatile base nitrogen (TVBN) which is an indicator of freshness. A register of TVBN analyses is maintained and these, in accordance with the Atmospheric Emission Licence, are reported to the Licensing Authority.

Fishmeal

Representative samples of every batch produced are drawn and sent to independent SANAS-approved laboratories for microbiological as well as wet chemistry analyses. All fishmeal is released in accordance with the positive release system, which is in accordance with the factory’s FEMAS and IFFO-RS system. See Certification for more information.``

Emission of vapours

Vapours collected are conveyed to odour treatment plant

Daily checks that vapour system is operational

Continuous monitoring to ensure speed and efficiency of process

Vapour generated during drying is recirculated to reduce emission into the atmosphere

Excess vapour from the drying process is incinerated in a rotary-type burner, which uses efficient, low-sulphur furnace oil for combustion

Only low-sulphur furnace oil used for burners and boilers

Forklift fleet used during loading replaced with battery-operated forklifts to reduce emissions

High-efficiency scrubbers condense vapour and fugitive emissions

Water Wastage

Fish water and liquid from the offloading facility and cookers are combined to produce a valuable concentrate which is added to the solids prior to drying

Water effluent is pumped into the municipal sewage system

No water effluent is discharged into the sea

Monthly samples of water effluent sent to an independent laboratory for analysis

Quality control

Daily production process records quantity and logistics of each catch

Daily samples of raw fish are sent away for scientific analysis to ensure quality

Hygiene

Thorough and regular cleaning

Several of the machines are self-cleaning after every batch processed

Pest control system is in place at all warehouses, and bait stations and maintained by a registered pest control service provider

High-pressure cleaning of storage facility is performed by an external service provider to ensure quality hygienic conditions

Use of old fish in production is strictly prohibited
